Overview:

Exploring Color & Energy is designed for artists of all levels who want to use color as an expressive, emotional force. Through playful experimentation and guided instruction, students will explore how bold color choices and confident brushwork can transform everyday subjects into energetic, personal paintings.


Techniques & Concepts Covered:

Expressive color mixing 

Harnessing color relationships to convey energy and atmosphere

Confident brushwork and mark-making

Simplification and abstraction of forms

Layering, transparency, and paint handling techniques

Developing personal visual language through experimentation


Materials List:

Paint: Titanium White, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber. Optional: Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo Blue, Yellow Ochre for extending range


Brushes: 1-2 Rounds (small and medium), 1-2 flats or brights (medium/large), 1 small brush for fine lines


Surfaces: 4-6 stretched canvases or canvas boards (9x12” or 11x14”)


Other: Palette (disposable or reusable), pencil with eraser for sketching, water container (recycled, big yogurt container works well), rags or paper towels, and palette pad paper or Stay Wet Palette container with paper

Anne Schutz

Anne is an accomplished instructor and painter from Falmouth, Maine. Her Master of Fine Arts in Painting comes from Boston University.
